This specimen was lot 1472 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it sold for $258.50. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FLORENCE: Cosimo I, 1536-1574, AR giulio, 1573. San Giovanni & San Cosimo standing, VF to EF, R." Cosimo de Medici (r. 1537-74) was the first grand duke of Tuscany, founding a line that lasted until 1737, when it fell to the Austrians. The Medici had long been the leading family of Florence but never the outright rulers until him. The giulio, a denomination originating in the neighboring Papal States, was a tenth of a scudo.
