This specimen was lot 13236 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $4,112. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Florence. Testone, ND. Alessandro De Medici (1532-37). Dies by Benvenuto Cellini. VERY FINE. From the Demarete Collection." Alessandro de Medici was the first duke of Florence but was murdered before he could consolidate the state, a task which fell to his cousin, Cosimo de Medici (r. 1537-74). Cosimo founded a line that lasted until 1737, when it fell to the Austrians. The Medici had long been the leading family of Florence but never the outright rulers until him.
