Turkmenistan 2000 500 manat KM-38
This specimen was lot 1142 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKMENISTAN: AR 500 manat, ND [2000], 60th Birthday of Saparmurat Niyazov, portrait of a young Saparmurat with his father and mother, in original case of issue, maximum mintage 1,000, Proof, S, ex Hans Mondorf Collection." This, the first Turkmen coin posted on this Wiki, is not granted a photo in the SCWC, so the identification remains tentative. Niyazov (1940-2006), dictator of Turkmenistan from 1991 until his death, was afflicted with megalomania rivaling that of his hero, Josef Stalin. Among other things, he renamed the months of the calendar after himself and his family.
Recorded mintage: est. 1,000.
Specification: 28.28 g, 0.925 fine silver, .835 troy oz AsW.
Catalog reference: KM-38.
