Sincona sale 23, lot 3221

This specimen was lot 3221 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 1,350 CHF (about US$1,696 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"TÜRKEI, Mohammed VI. 1918-1921 500 Piaster 1918/19. Fast vorzüglich. (Turkey, Ottoman empire, Mohammed VI (1918-21), 500 piastres of 1918, choice extremely fine.)"

This specimen is from a series struck in Istanbul during the reign of Sultan Muhammed VI (r. 1918-23). This coin is the only 500 kurush of Muhammed VI, the last Ottoman sultan, and the Ataturk regime struck only a few more in the 1920's. Ottoman coins were dated using regnal years; the reverse bears the date AH 1336 (= 1918 A.D.) while the obverse bears the regnal year 1 (= 1918 A.D.). The Hejira calendar uses a lunar year instead of a solar year, so its starting date moves from year to year.

Recorded mintage: 26,984.

Specification: 36.08 g, 0.917 fine gold, 1.063 troy oz AGW, this specimen 36.00 g.

Catalog reference: Schl. 744. Fr-184 (formerly Fr-70), KM 823.
