Sincona sale 31, lot 191

This specimen was lot 191 in Sincona sale 31 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 220 CHF (about US$261 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted, "OTTOMAN TUNIS | Transitional Coinage riyal 1303ah (1886ce) AR Fdc. Beginning with the year 1298ah (1881ce), during the regency of Muhammed al-Sadiq Bey, the name of the Ottoman Sultan no longer appears on Tunisian coins. Henceforth, only the name of the reigning Bey is to be read on the obverse. The French Protectorate was founded that same year although decimal coinage was not introduced until 1308ah (1891ce)." This type was struck AH 1300-1308. It is scarce but not rare.
