Tunisia AH 1275 2 kharub
The coin shown is a copper two kharub from the reign of Sultan Abdul Mejid, minted in Tunis. From AH 1272, all coins exhibited reference to the local ruler (or Bey) of Tunis, along with the Ottoman sultan. Tunisia was under the control of the Ottomans for centuries until lack of financial resources forced it into dependence on France, which made it a protectorate in 1881.
This specimen was part of lot 202 on Dec 13, 2011 at the Kunker Auction #199 in Osnabruck, Germany, where it sold for 60 euros. The catalog description reads:
"OSMANISCHE MÜNZEN Münzen nach der Münzreform von 1845 Kupferprägungen der Münzstätte Tûnis 2 Kharruba 1275 und 1276 H., (2x, 1x mit dicker, 1x mit dünner Schrift), Tûnis. 1275 mit Muhammad Bay (1271-1276 H.), 1276 mit Muhammad as-Sâdiq (1276-1299 H.). 3 Stück. Sehr schön (Ottoman coins of the reform of 1845, copper two kharub, AH 1275 and 1276 (2 pieces), Tunis mint, very fine.)"
