Sincona sale 31, lot 59

This specimen was lot 59 in Sincona sale 31 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 475 CHF (about US$564 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "OTTOMAN TUNIS | Mahmud II (1223-1255ah/1808-1839ce) 2 riyals 1244ah (1828ce) Bi bold xf." This type was struck AH 1244-1248 in the name of Mahmud II in Constantinople. It is very scarce in nice condition and the first of its denomination. Sixteen kharub made a piastre or riyal, the largest silver coin issued in Tunisia prior to this type.
