Trinidad and Tobago 1984 cent
This specimen was lot 73624 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "TRINIDAD & TOBAGO. Cent, 1984. Llantrisant Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-67 Red Gold Shield. Some light die polishing is noted, but this seemingly flawless specimen otherwise wholly engages the viewer and presents somewhat of a reverse proof appearance. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." The islands of Trinidad and Tobago, originally invaded and occupied by the Spanish, were wrested from Spanish control by the British in 1797. The two islands were merged as a single entity in 1888. It remained a colony of Great Britain until achieving independence in 1976. The coinage designs from the early 1970's were retained after independence. The coin shown is a bronze cent issued after the proclamation of a republic. It was struck 1974-76 as KM 25 and 1976-2000 as KM 29. The Franklin mint struck collector versions in 1983-84.
