Trier 1624 thaler Dav-5887
This specimen was lot 1647 in Jean Elsen sale 125 (Brussels, June 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, TREVES, Philipp Christoph von Sötern (1623-1652), AR Taler, Coblence. D/ B. à d. R/ Ecu sous trois heaumes. Rare Traces de corrosion presque Très Beau. Provient de la collection J.-M. Chouters. (Germany, Trier, Philip Christopher of Sötern (1623-1652), silver thaler, Coblenz mint. Obverse: bust to right; reverse: arms below three helms. Rare, traces of corrosion, almost very fine. From the J. M. Chouters collection.)"
The archbishopric issued numerous thalers in the seventeenth century (Dav-5863 thru Dav-5893), only a few such as this one appear at all. The region was annexed by France in 1792 and awarded to Prussia in 1815 by the Congress of Vienna.
