Künker sale 406, lot 4067

This specimen was lot 4067 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €3,200 (about US$4,199 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"TRIER, ERZBISTUM, Lothar von Metternich, 1599-1623. Goldgulden 1619, Koblenz. GOLD. RR Kl. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, sehr schön +. (archbishopric of Trier, Lothar of Metternich, 1599-1623, goldgulden of 1619, Koblenz mint. Very rare, minor edge cracks, choice very fine.)"

The archbishop also struck Fr-3459 with Jesus Christ on the obverse instead of St. Peter. Trier was a major issuer of goldgulden in the fifteenth century and this example is still medieval looking. The archbishopric issued numerous thalers in the seventeenth century (Dav-5863 thru Dav-5893), only a few ever appear for sale. The region was annexed by France in 1792 and awarded to Prussia in 1815 at the Congress of Vienna.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.25 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 3.19 g.

Catalog reference: KM 40, Fr-3460; v. Schr. 111.
