Künker sale 263, lot 1395

This specimen was lot 1395 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €6,000 (about US$7,751 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ERZBISTUM Johann Hugo von Orsbeck, 1676-1711. Reichstaler o. J. Koblenz. Brustbild r. in geistlichem Ornat//Unter Kurhut die drei Wappenschilde Trier-Prüm, Orsbeck und Speier-Weissenburg, dahinter Krummstab und Schwert gekreuzt. RR Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, kl. Inventarnummer, fast vorzüglich. (Germany, archbishopric of Trier, John Hugo of Orsbeck, 1676-1711, undated thaler, Coblenz mint. Obverse: robed bust to right; reverse: arms of Trier, Orsbeck and Speyer, elector's hat above, crozier and sword behind. Attractive example with nice patina, old inventory number inked on obverse, choice extremely fine.)

Erzbischof Johann Hugo von Orsbeck war ein Neffe seines Vorgängers Karl Kaspar von der Leyen. Während seiner Regierungszeit hatte das Erzbistum Trier unter den Zerstörungen des Pfälzer und des Spanischen Erbfolgekrieges zu leiden. Als der Kurfürst im Jahr 1711 starb, war Trier französisch besetzt. Erst 1714 wurde die Stadt in der Regierungszeit seines Nachfolgers geräumt. Dieser äußerst seltene repräsentative Taler, von dem wir in unserer Auktion 77 ein Exemplar in doppeltem Gewicht versteigern konnten, weist durch Titulatur und Wappen auf die Nebenämter von Johann Hugo hin, nämlich Bischof von Speyer und Administrator der Stifte Prüm und Weißenburg. (Archbishop Johann Hugo von Orsbeck was a nephew of his predecessor Karl Kaspar von der Leyen. During his reign the archdiocese of Trier suffered from the devastation of the Palatinate and the War of Succession. When the Elector died in 1711, Trier was occupied by the French. Only in 1714 the city was evacuated in the reign of his successor. This extremely rare Taler, of which we sold a copy in double weight in our auction 77, has the arms of the other titles of Johann Hugo, namely Bishop of Speyer and administrator of Prüm and Weißenburg.)"
