Travancore (1939-40) chuckram

Stack's Bowers September 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 75231

formerly in the Mountain Groan Collection

The first specimen was lot 75231 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description^[1] noted, "INDIA. Travancore. Chuckram, ND (1939-40). Chithira Thirunal Bala Rama Varma II (under George VI as Emperor). NGC MS-65 Red Brown. Variety with no date. A lovely Gem with deep coppery color and a gentle tone. Quite attractive on account of its crisp, lustrous originality." This type also comes dated ME1114. The type is common tho the proofs are rare. Travancore was a princely state on the SW tip of India adjacent to the Madras presidency.
