This specimen was lot 1032 in Jean Elsen sale 111 (Brussels, December 2011), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"SAINT EMPIRE, TRANSYLVANIE (SIEBENBÜRGEN), Charles VI (1711-1740), AV ducat, 1713, Droit : B. l., drapé et cuirassé à droite, coiffé d'une grande perruque. Revers : Aigle impériale couronnée, avec l'écu de Transylvanie sur la poitrine. Très Rare. Petite griffe et fines brisures de coin au droit. Superbe. (Holy Roman Empire, Transylvania, Charles VI (1711-40), gold ducat of 1713. Obverse: draped and armored bust to right, wearing a large wig. Reverse: crowned imperial eagle, with the arms of Transylvania on its breast. Very rare, tiny scratches on the obverse, extremely fine)"

While the ducats of the seventeenth century were issued by the local princes and vary widely in design, by the reign of Charles VI (father of Maria Theresia), Transylvania was firmly under Hapsburg control. Friedburg lumps all the ducats of this reign under one catalog number while the SCWC divides them into five types to account for their considerable variation. The design is very similar to the regular ducats of Austria but the reverse legend states, "PRINC.TRANSYL." in addition to the emperor's other titles. This type of 1713-16 is only slightly less rare than the preceding type of Joseph I.
