Transylvania 1702-FT ducat Fr-498
This specimen was lot 31899 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Leopold I gold Ducat 1702-FT MS63 PCGS, Klausenburg mint. Wonderfully preserved and with original luster throughout, this rare issue features the impeccably rendered, standing figure of Leopold and reverse illustrations that express an equal level of impressive definition. A slight as-made wave to the flan is noted for the sake of accuracy, adding yet another layer of interest to this remarkable offering. Presently unchallenged in this top level of certification, and a model representative of this elusive type as such." The princes of Transylvania were sandwiched between the Ottoman Empire to the south and the Hapsburg dominions to the west and attempted to maintain independence from both. The Hapsburgs reconquered Hungary from the Turks in the 1680's and ended Transylvanian autonomy. This type is listed for 1701-04.
