Transylvania 1689-AF ducat Fr-448
This specimen was lot 21612 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "TRANSYLVANIA. Ducat, 1689. Fogaras Mint. Michael Apafi. PCGS Genuine--Holed, AU Details Gold Shield. A well struck example with good definition of the details. Pierced at 12 o'clock on the obverse as indicated on the PCGS insert. Despite its shortcomings a handsome and affordable example of the type sure to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters." This type was struck 1684-90 and is rare as usual for Transylvanian ducats. Michael Apafi was the last prince of Transylvania to claim any autonomy and on his death, the region was annexed to the Hapsburg empire.
