Goldberg sale 69, lot 5447
Transylvania 1684 thaler rev Goldberg 69-5447.jpg

This specimen was lot 5447 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it sold for $20,125. The catalog description [1] noted, "Transylvania. Taler, 1684/3 AI. Michael Apafi, 1661-1690. Bust right with fur cap and holding sword. Reverse: Crowned arms. A lovely example, well struck with considerable original mint luster and attractive gray tone. Rare in this grade. NGC graded MS-63." Like most coins of Transylvania, this type (struck 1681-87) is rare and expensive. As Transylvania was never part of the Holy Roman Empire and was only at this point coming under Hapsburg rule, we have not included it in the "silver thalers of Germany."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-4820; KM-492.
