Transylvania 1670-AF 10 ducats Fr-430
This specimen was lot 3373 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €30,000 (about US$38,754 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SIEBENBÜRGEN, FÜRSTEN Michael Apafi, 1661-1690. 10 Dukaten 1670, AF, Arx Fogaras. (Arabeske) MICHAEL · APAFI · D · G · PRIN · TRAN (Arabeske) Geharnischtes Hüftbild r. mit Kalpag (Pelzmütze), mit der Rechten das Zepter schulternd, die Linke am Schwertgriff//PAR · REG · HVN · DOM · ET · SIC · CO 1670 Gekröntes und verziertes siebenbürgisches Wappen mit dem Familienwappen Apafi als Mittelschild, unten zu den Seiten das Münzstättenzeichen A - F. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Leichte Bearbeitungsspuren, sehr schön. Michael Apafi wurde im November 1661 von den Ständen zum Fürsten gewählt. Nach der Niederlage der Türken vor Wien 1683 schloß der Fürst mit Kaiser Leopold einen Vertrag, infolge dessen der Landtag die Oberhoheit des Kaisers anerkannte. Er starb im April 1690. (principality of Transylvania, Michael Apafi, 1661-90, ten ducats of 1670. Obverse: armored bust with fur hat holding scepter in right hand; reverse: crowned and quartered arms of Transylvania with Apafi arms in central escutcheon, the mint master's initials below. Very rare, lightly tooled, very fine. Michael Apafi was elected prince in November 1661. After the Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683, Michael signed a treaty with the emperor acknowledging the emperor's suzerainty. Apafi died in April 1690)."
The princes of Transylvania were sandwiched between the Ottoman Empire to the south and the Hapsburg dominions to the west and attempted to maintain independence from both. The Hapsburgs reconquered Hungary from the Turks in the 1680's and ended Transylvanian autonomy. Unlike many Transylvanian ducats, this type was struck multiple years (1668-71). A hexagonal klippe also exists (KM-A403).
