Sincona sale 66, lot 2089

This specimen was lot 2089 in Sincona sale 66 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 15,000 CHF (about US$19,748 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SIEGENBURGEN, Fürstentum, Sigismund Bathori, 1581-1602. Taler 1597 NB, Nagybànya. Selten. Vorzüglich. Übliche Stempelfehler. (principality of Transylvania, Sigismund Bathori, 1581-1602, thaler of 1597, Nagybànya mint. Rare, Extremely fine, With the usual faulty die.)"

The princes of Transylvania were sandwiched between the Ottoman Empire to the south and the Hapsburg dominions to the west and attempted to maintain independence from both. The Hapsburgs reconquered Hungary from the Turks in the 1680's and ended Transylvanian autonomy.
