Stack's Bowers November 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 78477

This specimen was lot 78477 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2025), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPANISH NETHERLANDS. Tournai. 1/2 Ecu, 1586. Tournai Mint. Philip II. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. From the Richard August Collection." By 1586, the revolt of the southern provinces had been crushed. The Spanish rulers, among other things, restored the old écu Philippe and its fractions and struck them to the end of the reign. This type was struck 1582-99 along with 1/20, 1/10, 1/5 and whole écus Philippe.
