This specimen was lot 1215 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €3,200 (about US$4,455 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"TOURNAI, Seigneurie, Les États en révolte (1577-1581), AR écu des États, 1578. D/ B. du roi à mi-corps à g., couronné et cuirassé, ten. un grand sceptre. R/ Écu couronné d'Autriche-Bourgogne, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Très rare. Exemplaire très attrayant, bien frappé sur un flan large et régulier. Belle patine de médaillier. Très Beau à Superbe. (lordship of Tournai, States Revolt, 1577-81, silver écu of the States of 1578. Obverse: half-length crowned and armored bust of the king to left, bearing a large scepter; reverse: crowned arms of Austria-Burgundy, order chain around. Very rare, very attractive example, well struck on a large, round planchet, nice patina, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)

Après la Pacification de Gand, tous les Pays-Bas se trouvaient réunis dans leur opposition au gouvernement espagnol. En 1577 et 1578, les États généraux firent frapper des écus, demis et quarts d'écus des États au buste et à la titulature de Philippe II. L'écu royal fut cependant remplacé par l'ancien écu d'Autriche-Bourgogne de Philippe le Beau et Charles Quint. Les États de Hainaut décidèrent d'ouvrir un atelier à Mons pour y battre monnaie en leur nom. Le maître Simon de Malines y fit frapper les écus et demi-écus des États en 1577 et 1578 avant de demander le transfert de l'atelier à Tournai. Pour appuyer sa requête, celui-ci fit valoir que la ville de Tournai était bien mieux située pour l'approvisionnement en métal auprès des marchans, changeurs et livreurs de Haynault, Flandres, Artois et des lieux circonvoisins, et signamment pour obvier à ce qu'ils ne transportassent leurs matériaux en France et Cambray; et comme il auroit trouvé par expérience que ladite ville de Mons ne seroit aucunement à ce propice, pour n'estre marchande ny en lieu passager, comme est bien celle de Tournai... L'atelier de Mons fut donc fermé et transféré à Tournai, qui poursuivit l'émission du monnayage des États en 1578 et 1579. (Following the Pacification of Ghent, the entire Netherlands was united in its opposition to the Spanish government. In 1577 and 1578, the States General authorized the minting of écus, half-écus, and quarter-écus—known as "States' coinage"—bearing the bust and titles of Philip II. The royal coat of arms, however, was replaced by the old Austria-Burgundy shield of Philip the Fair and Charles V. The States of Hainaut decided to open a mint in Mons to strike coinage in their own name. The mint master, Simon de Malines, struck the States' écus and half-écus there in 1577 and 1578 before requesting that the mint be transferred to Tournai. To support his request, he argued that the city of Tournai was far better situated for procuring metal supplies from merchants, money changers, and suppliers in Hainaut, Flanders, Artois, and the surrounding regions—specifically to prevent them from transporting their bullion to France and Cambrai—and because he had found through experience that the said city of Mons was in no way suitable for this purpose, being neither a commercial hub nor situated on a major transit route, unlike Tournai. The Mons mint was therefore closed and transferred to Tournai, which continued to issue the States' coinage in 1578 and 1579.)"
