Togo, originally explored and annexed by Germany in the 1880's, was partitioned by France and England after World War One. The western (British) portion eventually became part of Ghana, while the eastern portion, after a period as a French colony, became the independent Republic of Togo in 1960. This coin was issued by the French for the colony just before independence. The SCWC notes this as a shared issue between Togo and the remainder of French West Africa. Previous issues of coinage for Togo occured in 1924-26 and 1948; these are rather scarce today.
