Tobago (1798) stampee
This specimen was lot 72647 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "TOBAGO. Tobago - French Guiana (Cayenne). Stampee (2-1/4 Pence), ND (1798). PCGS AU-55. Issued by local act of 5 November 1798. 'TBo' countermark on a 1789 French Guiana 2 Sous. The countermark is deeply applied on a nicely preserved host with much remaining detail. The surfaces are smooth displaying lovely chocolate brown patina with areas of lighter coloration atop of the devices adding to its pleasing appearance. A fantastic representation of the type that is leagues finer than normally encountered destined for an advanced collector seeking high grade survivors." Tobago, an island to the east of Trinidad, also counterstamped 1½ pence, 1½ bits (rare) and 11 bits (rare).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: copper.
