Timor 1970 5 escudos rev DSLR.jpg

This issue, minted in Lisbon for the Portuguese colony of Timor, is the only five escudos for that colony. Issues for that colony did not commence until 1945, after the Japanese surrender, and continued until Portuguese withdrawal in 1975. Soon after, Indonesian forces occupied and devastated the island until Australian pressure caused them to withdraw as well, in 1999. The area preserves a fragile independence as the Republic of Timor-Leste.

Recorded mintage: 1,200,000.

Specification: copper-nickel.

Catalog reference: KM 21.
