Teutonic Order 1687 thaler Dav-5862
This specimen was lot 3181 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 6,500 CHF (about US$7,840 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Deutscher Orden, Franz Ludwig von Pfalz-Neuburg, 1694-1732. Taler 1687, Friedberg. Sehr selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Etwas berieben auf der Vorderseite. Feine Patina. (Germany, Teutonic Order, grandmaster Francis Louis of Pfalz-Neuburg, 1694-1732, thaler of 1687, Friedburg mint. Very rare, Very fine-extremely fine, Slightly polished on obverse, Nice toning.)"
Altho the Teutonic Order is best remembered in history for its activities in Prussia and Latvia, these scarce thalers were minted for them in Friedberg in the Austrian Breisgau.
