Kunker sale 293, lot 1553

This specimen was lot 1553 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,235 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Erzherzog Maximilian als Hochmeister des Deutschen Ordens, 1585-1590-1618. Reichstaler o. J. Nürnberg. RR Herrliche Patina, kl. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, vorzüglich. Erzherzog Maximilian, *12.10.1558 Wiener Neustadt, Ó02.11.1618 Wien, wurde 1585 zum Koadjutor und 1590 zum Hoch- und Deutschmeister des Deutschen Ordens ernannt. Bereits 1602 wurde Maximilian Gubernator von Tirol. 1603 erhielt er von Kaiser Rudolf II. das Recht, in Hall jeden 15. Zain unter seinem Bild prägen zu lassen. Nach dem Tode Rudolfs II. wurde Erzherzog Karl Hochmeister des Deutschen Ordens und Maximilian regierte bis zu seinem Tod in Tirol. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Maximilian as Grandmaster of the Teutonic Order, 1585-1618, undated thaler, Nurnberg mint. Rare, beautiful patina, small edge crack, extremely fine. Archduke Maximilan (1558-1618), was in 1585 Coadjutor and in 1590 Grandmaster of the Teutonic Order. In 1602, he was made governor of Tyrol. In 1603, the emperor granted Maximilian the right to stamp every fifteenth coin minted in Hall with his image. After the death of Rudolf in 1612, Maximilian resigned as Grandmaster but remained governor of Tyrol until his death.)"

Altho the Teutonic Order is best remembered in history for its activities in Prussia and Latvia, these scarce thalers were minted for them in Nuremberg. Altho this specimen is not dated, Davenport reports others dated 1587.
