Sincona sale 66, lot 2058

This specimen was lot 2058 in Sincona sale 66 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$1,053 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"TAIWAN | Republik, 500 Yuan (500 NT Dollars) Jahr 80 (1991). 80. Jahrestag der Gründung der Republik, Sun-Yat-sen. Polierte Platte. Im Originaletui mit Zertifikat. (republic of Taiwan, five hundred yuan, year 80 (1991), eightieth anniversary of the founding of the republic. Obverse: Sun Yat-Sen. Choice Proof, In original box with certificate.)"

Taiwan was originally administered as part of Fujian Province. The archipelago became its own province in 1875. It was seized by Japan in the First Sino-Japanese War in 1895, and returned in 1945. The Republic of China government made Taiwan its seat in 1949, and it has been administered as a separate country since, though the People’s Republic of China does not recognize its independence. This coin or medal is not listed in the SCWC or Unusual World Coins.
