Szechuan (1901-08) dollar Y-238
Szechuan (Sichuan) Province is in the south central part of China, and is an important economic power in the country. The capital is Chengdu. In the early 20th Century it, along with Tibet, was made a special administrative district, acknowledging the dominance of non-Han Chinese people in the region. The Szechuan mint with modern equipment opened in 1898 with machinery brought from New Jersey, USA. Another mint was opened in Chungking in 1905.
The first specimen shown was lot 60607 in Ponterio sale 162 (Hong Kong, August 2011), where it sold for $1912. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Szechuan. 7 Mace 2 Candareens (Dollar), ND (ca. 1901-08). 四川省造光緒元寶七錢二分銀幣。Toned. 有包漿。NGC XF-45. Ex: The Frank Robinson Collection." The second specimen was lot 53395 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $8,400. The catalog description[2] noted, "CHINA. Szechuan. 7 Mace 2 Candareens (Dollar), ND (1901-08). PCGS Genuine--Chopmark, AU Details Gold Shield. Narrow Face Dragon variety. Displaying detail that is far closer to Mint State than Extremely Fine, this stunning survivor possesses designs that are sharply executed and surfaces that are covered in pleasing gray-brown patina that contains iridescent undertones. Two chopmarks, one on each side, account for the grade, but do little to diminish the appeal of this lovely Dollar. 四川省造光緒元寶七錢二分銀幣。窄臉龍。細節之清晰更接近 MS 級別而非 EF。設計鑄打纖毫畢現,表面有灰棕色包漿,虹彩透現。兩面各有一枚戳記,因而得此評分,但無損整體美感。"
