This specimen was lot 47635 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $5,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "SYRIA. 5 Pounds, AH 1398 (1978). NGC MS-63." This semi-medallic coin struck at the Paris Mint bears the portrait of Hafez al-Assad, president-for-life of Syria (r. 1970-2000). This design was also used on a nickel one pound (KM 115) and a gold one pound (KM X1).
Recorded mintage: 5,000.
Specifications: 40 g, 0.900 fine gold, 35 mm diameter, reeded edge, 1.157 troy oz AGW.
