Sincona sale 101, lot 4493

This specimen was lot 4493 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 275 CHF (about US$415 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Eidgenossenschaft, 5 Franken 2025, CIT. Matterhorn. Sehr selten. Nur 1'865 Exemplare geprägt. Polierte Platte. Die Dreidimensionalität des Matterhornes wurde bei dieser Prägung in einer absolut einmaligen und beeindruckenden Art und Weise umgesetzt. (confederation of Switzerland, five francs of 2025, Bern mint. Very rare. Only 1,865 specimens struck, Choice Proof. The three-dimensionality of the Matterhorn was captured in this engraving in an absolutely unique and impressive way.)"

This NCLT was struck by B. H. Mayer Kunstprageanstalt of Germany, a private mint. Numista comments that the obverse shows "Edward Whymper, Lord Francis Douglas, Charles Hudson, Douglas Hadow, Michel Croz, and two Zermatt guides, Peter Taugwalder and his son of the same name, who made the first ascent of Matterhorn on 14 July 1865." Four of the expedition (Douglas, Hudson, Hadow and Croz) died on the way down from the peak.
