This specimen was lot 4462 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it sold for $2,012.50. The catalog description [2] noted, "Switzerland. 500 Francs, 2009. Obwalden Festival. Mintage only 178 struck. Choice Brilliant Proof." This semi-medallic coin is a descendant of the shooting thalers first awarded in the early nineteenth century altho it seems improbable that any of these circulated. Obwalden is a canton of Switzerland. This series of 500 francs supplanted a series of thousand franc coins issued 1984-94. This design was also sued on a silver fifty francs (KM XS77).
Recorded mintage: 175.
Specification: 19.59 g, 0.900 fine gold, .6297 troy oz AGW, 37 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: Fr-514r, KM-XS78.
