Stack's Bowers 2025 ANA sale, lot 42618
SB825-42618r.jpg

This specimen was lot 42618 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $5,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. 4 Daler Plate Money, 1743. Avesta Mint. Fredrik I. EXTREMELY FINE. Some typical striking weakness is observed for the corner stamps, but this deep brown example stands as an impressive and imposing survivor of this curious form of hefty currency." In the pre-reform Swedish coinage, 8 öre = one mark and 96 öre = one riksdaler. The famous Swedish plate money was issued from 1644 to 1776 in denominations from half a daler to four dalers. This half daler plate, struck 1720-50, is probably the most common. Large numbers have been recovered from wrecks. Millions of four daler plates were made but most were melted down to make other copper or bronze objects.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: 3023 g, copper, this specimen 3.1 kg.

Catalog reference: KM-PM74; SM-211.
