Stack's Bowers 2026 NYINC sale, lot 43311
SB126-43311r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43311 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. 4 Daler Plate Money, 1729. Avesta Mint. Fredrik I. VERY FINE. This handsome large-size issue displays attractive brown patina with areas of richer coloration throughout. The stamps are all boldly applied with four-digit dates, three complete ciphers, and partials of the crowns. The central is somewhat uneven with a bit of weakness in the lower left quadrant stamp. Close inspection reveals evidence of faint porosity, but overall the appearance exceeds most seen. Ex: Heritage (9/2007) Lot # 52462." In the pre-reform Swedish coinage, 8 öre = one mark and 96 öre = one riksdaler. This type was issued 1720-46 and is the most common four daler plate. Millions were made but most were melted down to make other copper or bronze objects.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper, this specimen 9 x 8.125 in.

Catalog reference: KM-PM74; AAH-192; BT-A10.
