Sincona sale 87, lot 3090

This specimen was lot 3090 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 6,125 CHF (about US$8,248 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEDEN, Karl XII. 1697-1718. 8 Mark 1701, Stockholm. Mit der Signatur HZ (Hendrik Zedritz, Münzmeister in Stockholm, 1700-1706). Selten. NGC AU Details. Feine Patina. Leicht gereinigt. (kingdom of Sweden, Charles XII, 1697-1718, eight marks of 1701, Stockholm mint, with mintmaster's initials HZ. Rare, nicely toned, lightly cleaned.)"

In 1701, Charles XII was embarking on the Great Northern War which would result in the destruction of the empire built by Gustavus Adolphus. In 1721, Sweden would surrender the Baltic provinces to Russia, Bremen and Verden to Hanover, most of Swedish Pomerania to Prussia and recognize Danish control of Schleswig-Holstein. This type was struck 1697, 1701 and 1704; the 1697 issue is catalogued as Dav-4541. The similar Dav-4540 was also struck at this time.
