Öre, 1662- GW. Stockholm Mint. Karl IX. NGC EF Details--Environmental Damage. Overstrike date 1662/0. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." This scarce type was struck 1661-64. Karl XI succeeded to the throne in 1660 at the age of four. He was not crowned until 1672, being under the regency of his mother and the Estates. In 1675, he found himself embroiled in war with Denmark which, by firm leadership and good luck, he won. The treaty of Fontainebleau of 1679 ended his last foreign war and he spent the rest of his reign reforming the army and restoring the royal finances. He died of cancer in 1697, aged 41 years.

Recorded mintage: 59,000.

Specifications: 1.23 g, 0.375 fine silver.
