Sudan AH 1311(11) 10 piastres
This specimen was lot 972 in Steve Album Auction 53 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "SUDAN: Abdullah b. Muhammad, 1885-1898, BI 10 piastres (10 qirsh), Omdurman, AH1311 year 11, issue of the Khalifa, regnal year and not denomination below toughra, a pleasing attractively toned mint state example, PCGS graded MS62. ex Dr. Wolfgang Schuster Collection." The independent states comprising Sudan since the 14th C. were brought together under the Egyptian Pasha Muhammad Ali in 1820-1822. Egyptian domination was broken in 1881 AD during the Mahdi Rebellion and the British quickly stepped in, controlling the Sudanese government until independence was declared in 1956. Early Sudanese coinage shows similarity to both Egyptian and Turkish designs. This type is noted for AH 1304 and 1311.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 12.36 g, billon, 26 mm diameter.
