Stack's Bowers 2020 ANA sale, lot 23614

This specimen was lot 23614 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "STRAITS SETTLEMENTS. Cent, 1895. Victoria. NGC MS-64 Red Brown. Pop: 4 in Red Brown, none graded finer in Red Brown or Brown by NGC. A stunning example of the type, with full satiny luster and close to full mint red, destined to become part of a top-notch collection." This type was struck in 1887-1901 after the Straits Settlements were made a separate crown colony and is scarce in nice condition despite the large mintage. It was converted to bronze for the 1884 issue (KM 9a) and given a reeded edge for the 1889 issue (KM 16).
