St. Thomas and Prince 1977 2500 dobras Fr-5
This specimen was lot 7269 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $376. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAINT THOMAS & PRINCE. 2,500 Dobras, 1977. NGC PROOF-69 ULTRA CAMEO. Mother and child. Brilliant open fields with no disturbances or signs of handling. From a mintage of a mere 170 pieces. Only the third proof striking to be certified and the finest thus far." It was issued in sets with KM 36, 37, 38, 39 (all gold 2500 dobras) and KM 31, 32, 33, 34, 35 (all silver 250 dobras). Circulating coinage from this impoverished country, which obtained independence from Portugal in 1975, is very scanty.
