This twenty escudos minted in Lisbon for the Portuguese colony of Sao Tomé e Principe, is the only issue of this denomination. This issue is accompanied by bronze fifty centavos and one escudo and copper-nickel 2½ (KM 19), five and ten escudos. The coin is fairly common despite the small mintage. The colony, originally a slave trading station, later turned to sugar production and finally cacao. The Portuguese withdrew in 1975.
Recorded mintage: 75,000.
Specification: nickel.
