St. Gall 1513 dicken

Sincona auction 98, lot 4470

This specimen was lot 4470 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 850 CHF (about US$1,233 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ St. Gallen, Stadt und Kanton, Dicken 1513, St. Gallen. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Fast FDC. Feine Patina. Korrosionsstelle auf Vorderseite. (Switzerland, St. Gall, dicken of 1513, St. Gall mint. Rare in this condition, About Mint State, Nicely toned. Corrosion area on the obverse.)"

This type was struck 1500-05, 1509-13. The dicken was 24 kreuzer or six batzen, at this time one third of a thaler. The reverse legend, "+SANCTUS*OTHMARVS*1504", cites St. Othmar, died 759, who was the first abbot of St. Gall. The abbey survived until 1805.
