Sri Lanka 1984 2 rupees
This specimen was lot 70329 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, February 2020), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "CEYLON (SRI LANKA). 2 Rupees, 1984. PCGS SPECIMEN-68 Gold Shield. Smooth, satiny fields show that special effort was expended in making this example. No spots, tone or fog. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." In 1972, Ceylon dropped its membership in the British Commonwealth and changed its name to Sri Lanka, which name is still in use. The nation has been torn by conflicts between Tamils and the majority Sinhalese. This type was struck 1984, 1993, 1996 and is common.
