Stephen Album internet sale 28, lot 753

This specimen was lot 753 in Stephen Album internet sale 28 (Santa Rosa, CA, July 2024), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "KOREA (SOUTH): AE 10 hwan, KE4294 (1961), Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus), South Korea national flower, a wonderful example, PCGS graded MS64 RD." This type was struck before in 1959. The 1961 is common while the 1959 is scarce; there must have been a major melting. While there are about 51 million people in South Korea today, in 1959 the population was only 25 million. We don't know why such a large mintage was deemed necessary.

Recorded mintage: 100,000,000.

Specification: 2.46 g, bronze, 19.1 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-1.
