This specimen was lot 981 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 3,875 CHF (about US$5,906 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SÜDAFRIKA Republik, seit 1960. Krügerrand 2017, Zum 50-jährigen Jubiläum des Krügerrands von 1967-2017. Sehr selten. Nur 1'967 Exemplare geprägt. Prachtexemplar. Eines der durch NGC höchstbewerteten Exemplare. (republic of South Africa, since 1960, krugerrand of 2017, commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the krugerrand. Very rare. Only 1'967 specimens struck. NGC PF70 DPL, Cabinet piece, One of the finest certified by NGC.)"

The krugerrand was introduced in 1967 as a one ounce gold bullion coin and was very popular around the world despite bearing the effigy of Paul Kruger, the chief exponent of apartheid. The white supremacist regime was ousted in 1989 but, amazingly enough, the krugerrand remains in production, tho in much reduced numbers. This anniversary was celebrated with several NCLT's, including KM 636 (1 oz silver), KM 637 (1 oz platinum), KM 638 (1/50 oz gold), KM 643 (1 oz gold, shown here), KM 644 (5 oz gold) and KM 645 (50 oz gold).

Recorded mintage: 100,000 plus 1,967 proofs.

Specification: 33.93 g, 0.917 fine gold, 32.69 mm diameter, reeded edge, 1 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 643, Fr-B1.
