This specimen was part of lot 21490 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), which sold for $1,116.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. Three Piece Natura Proof Set, 1999. GEM BRILLIANT PROOF. Fr-B11, B12 & B13; KM-252.1, 253 & 254. Each piece with a reported mintage as follows: 1/10 ounce - 4,930 pieces, 1/4 ounce - 3,019 pieces, 1/2 ounce - 7,787 pieces, but only a maximum of 499 set were produced. With certificate of authenticity and case of issue, serial # 325. Also includes a miniature cast silver forepart of a Kudu." South Africa, after a turbulent history between English and Dutch settlers and the native population, was constituted the Union of South Africa in 1910. Coinage commenced in 1923. The krugerrand was introduced in 1967 as a one ounce gold bullion coin and was very popular around the world despite bearing the effigy of Paul Kruger, the chief exponent of apartheid. The white supremacist regime was ousted in 1989 but, amazingly enough, the krugerrand remains in production. As competition for it, the South African government also marketed the Natura series, featuring various animals native to the region. The greater kudu is depicted on this issue of 1999.

Recorded mintage: 3,019 proofs.

Specification: 7.78 g, 0.999 fine gold, .250 troy oz AGW, 22 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 253.
