This specimen was lot 72476 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. 2 Rand, 1972. NGC MS-65." In 1960, South Africa withdrew from the British Commonwealth and in 1961 issued all new coins, dropping the bust of the queen for explorer Jan van Riebeeck. This type was issued 1961-83 along with a gold one rand, minted to the standard of a half sovereign. Sold to collectors and bullion speculators, this type never achieved the popularity of the krugerrand introduced in 1967. The first two rand coin struck for circulation was issued in 1998.

Recorded Mintage: 18,000 plus 7,500 proofs.

Specification: 7.98 g, 0.917 fine gold, .235 troy oz AGW (same standard as a British sovereign).
