SB524-33674r.jpg

This specimen was lot 33674 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. 2 Rand, 1967. Pretoria Mint. NGC MS-62. A pleasing Mint State example, delivering good eye appeal, with strong luster and limited instances of handling." In 1960, South Africa withdrew from the British Commonwealth and in 1961 issued all new coins, dropping the bust of the queen for explorer Jan van Riebeeck. This type was issued 1961-83 along with a gold one rand, minted to the standard of a half sovereign. Sold to collectors and bullion speculators, this type never achieved the popularity of the krugerrand introduced in 1967.

Recorded mintage: 10,000 plus 11,000 proofs.

Specification: 7.98 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: KM-64.
