In 1960, South Africa withdrew from the British Commonwealth and in 1961 issued all new coins, dropping the bust of the queen for explorer Jan van Riebeeck. This type accompanied a silver ten, twenty and fifty cents. It matched the module of the old sixpence. Hoarded for its silver, it is today common.
Recorded mintage: 3,567,000 plus 16,000 proofs.
Specification: 2.83 g, 0.500 fine silver, 17.3 mm diameter.
