This specimen was lot 75664 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. 5 Shillings, 1955. Pretoria Mint. Elizabeth II. NGC PROOFLIKE-66. Fully brilliant with a resplendent Prooflike appearance. A stunning example of a youthful Queen Elizabeth." In 1960, South Africa seceded from the Commonwealth and Elizabeth's portrait was removed from the coinage. This type was issued 1953-59 and is common.
Recorded mintage: 40,000 plus 2,850 proofs plus 2,230 prooflike.
