In 1960, South Africa withdrew from the British Commonwealth and in 1961 issued all new coins, dropping the bust of the queen for explorer Jan van Riebeeck. This type was issued 1953-60 and is common.
Recorded mintage: 4,249,000 plus 3,150 proofs.
Specification: 14.14 g, 0.500 fine silver, 32.3 mm diameter.
