Stack's Bowers 2021 ANA sale, lot 46079

This specimen was lot 46079 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $228. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. Shilling, 1943. NGC MS-65. An attractive Gem with full soft cartwheel luster, sharp strike, and a bare hint of gray toning." The shilling was struck in South Africa 1923-60. It was 0.800 fine silver until 1950 and 0.500 fine thereafter. This type was struck for George VI 1937-47. In 1948, the obverse legend was revised to drop "IMPERATOR".

Recorded mintage: 4,187,999 + 104 proofs, the commonest date.

Specification: 5.65 g, 0.800 fine silver, 23.6 mm diameter.
