This specimen was lot 3389 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $705. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. 2 Shillings, 1940. NGC MS-65. A fully gem mint state with glittering cartwheel luster throughout. Tied for finest certified." The florin or two shillings was struck in South Africa 1923-60. It was 0.800 fine silver until 1950 and 0.500 fine thereafter. The 1940 two shillings begins a run of common dates 1940-43. This specimen realized twenty-eight times the catalog value.

Recorded mintage: 2,600,000.

Specification: 11.31 g, 0.800 fine silver, 28.52 mm diameter.
